Technical Field

This project involves the technical fields of Network Security, Mobile Technology, and Information Security.

Background Information

We all agree that scams are a huge problem in society that affects million of people around the world every single day. If I can reduce the amount of scam link, I can save a lot of people’s livelihoods. If some random person is calling you that you do not know, you can just not answer them. But if they are texting you with some link that might get you interested in, it will be more dangerous. So, I want to make an app that tells you if the link is safe to open or not.

Prior Art (legal term)

When working on my initial idea, I came across several similar applications, however none of these quite matched what I had in mind. Especially, What I am trying to make is telling you if you get a text with a link, it automatically tells you if that link is safe to open or not. Here are some websites which are similar with mine. There are a lot more than that, but they are all same concept. If you want to check if it’s scam or not, you have to go in that website and put the link that you got and it will check you. So, I think it has really different concept with mine.

Project Description

Smishing Detection is the app that helps you with text scam link. If you get a text message with some link, it will automatically check the link itself if it is safe to open or not.

Innovation Claim

This project is innovative since people are getting suspicious links from random people with some interesting information. They will open it eventually and will lose some information from them. I would like to stop before they click it.

Usage Scenario

Billions text messaging are made every day in the United States alone, and a great portion of those are spam message with a random link. According to the Washington Post, Americans received more than 30 billion spam text in 2019. The project was initiated to reduce people's loss of information by hacking.

Objectives and Tasks Associated with the Project

Identify if link from text message has been hacked

  • Research methods of spam texting

  • Study which links are likely to have been hacked

  • Research the most known link from the hacker

Identify all the ways a spam messages can be hacked

  • Research methods of spam messages with a link

Identify if the link is from government or known company

  • Research methods of spam links

Develop and code the application

It automatically starts as soon as you open the app.

Description of Design Prototype

The application would be intended for smartphones and is designed to be very simple to use. As soon as you open the app, it will automatically start. when you receive a text message, the app will automatically check if there is a URL. If a URL is found, the app will automatically let you know if it is a safe link or not.

Evaluation Plan

The top priority for our team to accomplish would be to identify with 100% accuracy when a text message has a link and check if it is safe or not. If I could at least solve this, then I would have a very real, marketable application that I could put on the market. There are other additional aspects that I could research to improve the application, however they are not critical for the app to be a success. Therefore, I will check all the links, and I will develop the application and open it to the public.
